Volunteer Team - Volunteer Car Drivers (Humber & Wolds Rural Action)

The Voluntary Car Service team in North Lincolnshire is made up of 35 selfless, community-minded drivers who use their own vehicles and time to support local residents facing genuine transport difficulties. Many of their passengers are elderly, isolated, or living in rural areas without access to public transport or the means to drive themselves. These volunteers ensure people can attend medical appointments, visit loved ones, do their shopping, or simply enjoy social groups like craft clubs, reading groups, and lunch outings. But they do far more than provide transport—they offer companionship, reassurance, and kindness, becoming a vital lifeline to those they serve.

Together, this team completes nearly 500 bookings each month, averaging 744 volunteer hours. Their flexibility and commitment are remarkable—some are still working, others are retired, and their ages range from mid-30s to late 80s. Several have volunteered for over a decade, with one member offering 25 years of continuous service. For many passengers, the driver may be the only person they see that week. The emotional impact of a friendly chat on the way to a daunting hospital appointment, or a safe journey to reconnect with friends, is priceless.

This service also positively impacts the volunteers themselves. Many joined after retirement or bereavement and have found purpose, connection, and joy in helping others. Passengers frequently share heartfelt thanks and glowing feedback, praising the drivers’ friendliness, reliability, and compassion. The team is celebrated at an annual lunch where they share stories, build community, and have a voice in shaping the service they help deliver.

Without these incredible volunteers, hundreds of residents would be left isolated and unsupported. Their work embodies community spirit at its best—quietly transforming lives, one journey at a time. The Voluntary Car Service is not just about transport; it’s about dignity, access, and human connection.
