Older Volunteer - Brian Wald (Men In Sheds)
Brian has been a founding trustee and driving force behind Barton Men in Sheds, consistently demonstrating extraordinary dedication, energy, and leadership well into his 80s. As a trustee and management committee member, Brian not only helps guide policy and ensure compliance with health and safety and safeguarding standards, but he also takes a hands-on role in mentoring new members, teaching woodworking skills, and representing the Shed at events.
Despite being affectionately known as “the Father of the Shed,” Brian’s energy and physical ability defy his age. He volunteers an average of three to four days each week. Since the Board of Trustees was established in 2020 he has been present at every opening of the Shed. In addition, he attends meetings of the Humberside Alliance of Men in Sheds as well as events aimed at promoting the Shed's role and existence.
Whether lifting heavy materials during Shed projects, building prototypes for others to replicate, or supporting members through companionship groups and social activities, Brian sets a powerful example of active, positive ageing.
His impact reaches far beyond practical tasks. Brian’s patience, common sense, and encouragement have empowered members to build confidence, gain skills, and improve their wellbeing. His initiatives have not only fostered a strong sense of community but have also raised vital funds through handcrafted items sold at local events—directly supporting the Shed’s sustainability and growth.
Brian is deeply respected and loved by all who work with him. His enthusiasm lifts the whole group, and his example encourages others to give their best. As the team at Barton Men in Sheds says: “We all look up to him, not just for what he does, but for who he is.” Brian is truly an irreplaceable asset to his community.
