Good Neighbour - Robert Cousins (Kingfisher Cafe)

Robert’s journey from client to valued volunteer and Trustee at the Kingfisher Cafe exemplifies resilience and dedication. Having overcome addiction and homelessness with the support of the charity and other agencies, Robert has been clean for several years. Robert has been a volunteer at the cafe for over 2 years and in December 2024 he accepted the position of Volunteer Cafe Manager, taking on a wide range of responsibilities including serving clients, handling stock, maintenance, and ensuring regulatory compliance. His close partnership with the Kitchen Manager has helped create a welcoming and supportive environment for all who visit.

Volunteering five mornings a week and often attending to issues after hours, Robert’s commitment is exceptional, especially as he balances these duties with ongoing health challenges. His role has brought him a renewed sense of purpose and self-worth, contributing to fewer hospital visits and a more active, engaged life. In May 2025, Robert was appointed as a Trustee, further recognizing his vital contribution to the charity.

Robert’s impact is profound; his calm, kind, and approachable nature fosters trust and openness among clients who feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues with him. His lived experience allows him to empathize deeply, offering practical support and guidance, which strengthens the charity’s connection with the local community and restores confidence in its services.

The charity expresses heartfelt gratitude for Robert’s unwavering dedication and hard work. His presence at the cafe and within the organization alleviates concerns among Trustees and ensures the smooth, compassionate running of the charity’s daily operations. Robert truly embodies hope and transformation, inspiring both clients and colleagues.
